Is Botox right for you?

In order to determine if Botox is a good fit, it is important to know how Botox works and who is an ideal candidate . It’s important to explore all available options for treating your specific aesthetic concerns. We offer free consultations with our medical staff to discuss your options.

  How Botox works

Botox is actually the name brand of one neurotoxin. Neurotoxin is defined as  synthetic or naturally occurring substances that damage, destroy, or impair the functioning of the central and/or peripheral nervous system.Botox is commonly used in areas of the face that we frequently use for expression. The crow’s feet, forehead lines, and furrows between the brows are common areas for treatment.  The neurotoxins not only diminish lines, but also smooth the skin and prevent the lines from becoming deeper or more intense.

Botox temporarily weakens facial movements that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Once these muscles are weakened, you are still able to make facial expressions, but they are less noticeable than before. The toxin molecule begins to block the connection between the nerves and the muscle. The results will begin to show as early as 7 days after the injections with the full effect seen around 10-14 days. Every 3 - 4 months the Botox will need to be repeated as new nerves make connections to the muscles and begin to regain activity. Your body will also naturally metabolize the product and begin to break it down over time.

Who is a good candidate for Botox treatment?

Adults with healthy skin that have moderate elasticity. The signs of aging are beginning to show and wrinkles are minimal to moderate. It is best suited for improving the appearance of dynamic wrinkles ( wrinkles that develop due to muscle contraction movements that occur naturally in your face.) Smiles, frowns, concentration lines, and laughing all cause dynamic wrinkles. Botox is not ideal once you have static wrinkles which are present with no movement and are due to loss of volume and other skin deficiencies.

When should I begin receiving Botox?

Any adult can benefit from the aesthetically pleasing look that Botox provides. Starting neurotoxins before the fine lines and wrinkles become deep or etched into the skin is recommended and will help in the long run. When you begin early on, the muscles can actually learn to not make certain expressions that eventually worsen the wrinkles and lines.  Preventative measures may actually cause you to need less neurotoxin or need it less often.

Botox is just one option, and it may not be the best fit for everyone. We recommend scheduling a free consultation with our medical staff to discuss your options and determine if Botox is a good fit for you.
