Most people may not consider visiting the dentist to address sleep apnea symptoms, but the Chestnut Ridge Team can also address this disorder. Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly starts and stops through the night. It is generally treated with a C-PAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Machine). “Many patients come to us because they cannot tolerate the C-PAP,” says Dr. Mufson. “We provide them with a mouthguard which fits better and is more comfortable. Patients that travel frequently find the mouthguard is much easier to bring along rather than a large C-PAP machine.”
Another sought-after specialty of the practice is Invisalign®, a system of clear braces which serve as a non-metal alternative to straighten teeth without metal wires or brackets. Each aligner set is custom-made for a patient’s teeth and gradually moves their teeth into an ideal position over time.
After an initial consultation, the patient’s mouth is thoroughly scanned, and the doctor is able to share a “before” and “after” image with the patient. The information is sent to Invisalign, and the doctor is provided with a clinical outline for the patient’s individualized treatment process. Once the process is reviewed and accepted by the dentist and patient, the treatment is ordered. “When we receive the aligners, we add the appropriate attachments to their teeth and start the process,” says Dr. Mufson. “Patients are given a few sets of aligners and instructions on how to clean and change them. They are usually seen once per month to monitor progress and dispense new aligners.”
Upon completing the Invisalign treatment, the patient is given a set of retainers to maintain their perfect smile!
