House of Colour's Carly King shares the benefits and misconceptions of color analysis

Do you have those items in your closet that ‘just don’t look right’ when you put them on? In my own experience, I had a sweater that I realized never made it out the door. It was a beautiful garment I loved, yet every time I tried to wear it, I inevitably changed before leaving the house. I couldn’t name what was happening, but something about that color was making me look tired and sallow.

We typically wear 15% of our clothes 85% of the time. That’s a lot of unworn or rarely worn clothes in our closets, which shows a lack of clarity on what works best and what fits our lifestyle. Color Analysis is an investment that will clarify all of those ongoing investments and purchases, helping you avoid a graveyard of unused makeup products, paying for hair color you don’t like, or a closet of clothes you don’t wear.

The Process

A Color Analysis happens in a 1-1 appointment or in groups of 2-4. In the analysis, we use our precision-dyed drapes to analyze your skin tone to determine your season. The process evaluates your skin undertones (that under-layer of skin that’s invisible to the eye), and we assess various factors, including warm, cool, clear, blended, bright, muted, rich, and splashy. Sound confusing? It isn’t! Your studio time with the drapes will bring all these values into focus for you. Your season gives insight into the best colors for your face, so we analyze your skin without any additions or filters in natural lighting.

Benefits

When considering a color analysis, most people think all about clothes. Tell a client who has completed a color analysis that “that color looks great on you!” and she’s sure to respond, “I know! I’ve had my colors done!”. But your clothing is just the start. Knowing your season impacts hair color, makeup, jewelry, and more!

Misconceptions

Myth #1: Virtual Color Analysis isn't as accurate as in person… sorry TikTok filters, it simply isn’t true! Think of all the light filtering that happens through the camera, a Color Analysis is analyzing your undertones and requires a process that is in person, without any filters, in natural light.

Myth #2: Your season is based upon ____ (eye color, hair color, vein color). All people with a particular trait do not fall into the same season. Name one of the four seasons, and I can find someone with blonde hair or blue eyes in every one. Even redheads can fall into a variety of seasons!

Myth #3: Your season can't change. Your season is yours - forever! Even as you tan throughout the year, your hair color changes (or grays!), or as you get older, your season will never change!

For Everyone

Color Analysis is for everyone! For both men and women, the right colors can enhance your presence and elevate your confidence. Confidence naturally follows when you feel and look your best in the right colors. I also see clients from school age and beyond; any stage of life can find it valuable because we all have to get dressed every day! I love having middle and high school students in my studio – the confidence they gain in seeing their unique beauty at such a transitional time is amazing. Boys and girls have all kinds of investments, from a pair of Air Force 1s to homecoming and prom attire or senior photos.

Color Analysis & Beyond

As an Image Consultant, I provide a full suite of services to help you clarify and refine your style and wardrobe. Most clients start with a Color Analysis to find their best colors, then return for a Style Analysis, which we consider to be the “second half of the puzzle”.

Round out the whole experience with a Closet Edit and Personal Shopping. What to do next can feel overwhelming to many, but there’s help to clean out and refresh your current closet, find the gaps in your wardrobe, and help you shop for those pieces that will fill your closet with clothes you love and wear.
