Being a little (or a lot!) over the top gets a bad rap. However, in some settings, it’s completely appropriate. Like, when it comes to lighting for your home.

But where do you start, and how do you choose the right lighting for your space? Table lamps, floor lamps, reading lamps, sconces, and overhead lighting – there are so many choices. Don’t stress – we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick guide to selecting the right lighting for your home.

  1. Warm vs. cool lighting. Not all lighting is created equally. Warm lighting does wonders for making a space in your home feel inviting and cozy. Warm lighting is always my pick.

  2. Layering isn’t just for the cold weather. Layering more than one style of lighting in a room is totally acceptable. In fact, we encourage it! Sprinkle table lights on a buffet or end table, then flank the sofa with floor lamps. We’re firm believers that you can’t have too many lighting options in a room.

  3. Go big or go home. That’s the name of the game when selecting overhead lighting. Have a room that needs a bit of an oomph? There’s a good chance the room demands a dramatic pop in the form of an over-sized, overhead light. Go for drama, fun, and a show-stopper of a look. It’s hard to go too large on overhead lighting. In most cases, people want to play it safe by going smaller, but the bigger the better here. You’ve got this!
