"We Eat and Breathe Design."

If you’re considering building a new home or renovating an existing one, you’ll need someone to help you plan and execute your vision.

Maybe you’ve found a house plan in one of those home design books or magazines. Or you're thinking of asking a contractor to help you figure out how to renovate.

It’s a start. But there are numerous reasons why hiring an architect, especially one that specializes in design-build planning, makes the best sense.

An architect is trained, experienced and licensed to work on the planning and design of buildings. They work hand-in-hand with homeowners to help them design the house or space of their dreams, from concept to completion.

“We do the design and serve as a construction manager,” says John W. MacFarlane, the founding principal of JWM Architects LLC in Glastonbury. “You’re trusting us to design your home, one that will be a fun and interesting place to live in and which goes back to the vision you brought to the table.”

In business since 1991, JWM has completed hundreds of diverse projects, but specializes in “exceptional residential and commercial design,” John says. He and his project architect of 17 years, Jane Laurent, specialize in renovations and new construction, from the smallest of rooms to grand estates. JWM also offers comprehensive services from conceptual design through construction administration and even interior design.

An architect can take the stress off you for the most expensive and challenging personal project you’ll likely ever undertake. An architect understands the process and can help you save money by maximizing the building lot you choose and your home’s living space within your budget. They also are your advocate throughout the entire process.

“Most clients have never designed a home but we’ve designed hundreds. With that comes the experience of what worked and what didn’t. We know you're anxious and that you’re spending a lot of money. We want to assure you that we’re going to steer you in the right direction.”

Building or renovating a home should also be a joyful experience, John says.

“One of the prime things that I try to do is make the house we’re building interesting and fun and livable for people. Because anyone can build a box but does that make sense for your living lifestyle? If you’re building a new house, we walk the property and talk to the owner about their ideas. ‘Why did you buy this land, what’s good about it? What’s bad about it?’ And then we maximize the good. Most people don’t know exactly what they want, but we eat and breathe design. We make it a positive and fun experience for our clients.”
