Kayal Orthopaedic Center “Backs the Blue”

The Practice with a Focus on Giving Back

Robert A. Kayal, M.D., Founder, President & CEO of Kayal Orthopaedic Center, had always wanted to be a physician—and orthopedics was the specialty he knew he wanted to pursue.

“It’s one of the only medical disciplines that offers immediate gratification--orthopedics fixes things! It’s so rewarding to have the ability to repair something that is broken and relieve my patients of their pain—often fully eradicating it. I can see the improvements almost immediately following surgery to correct a hip deformity, perform a knee replacement, or repair a sports injury. And to know our patients are back on the court or returning to the field after their recovery is very satisfying.”

Born and raised in Bergen County and a self-proclaimed “people person,” Dr. Kayal is passionate about providing his patients with the highest level of compassionate orthopedic care.

The Kayal Orthopaedic Center opened its doors for the community of Westwood several years ago when Pascack Valley Hospital reopened after an extended shutdown. Its extended closure caused many of its affiliated physicians to move to other facilities. Dr. Kayal and his team arrived to fill the void in orthopedic services with an office located at 260 Old Hook Road in Westwood. “Now we bring high caliber orthopedic services to Westwood, such as the MAKO robotic arm-assisted total hip and knee replacement surgeries,” says Dr. Kayal.

This passion for community service goes even deeper for Robert Kayal, M.D., who generously shares his time and talents with our local police departments.

Dr. Kayal doubles down on giving back to the law enforcement community with his unwavering commitment to supporting northern New Jersey and Rockland County police departments by providing concierge medical services to officers and their families. This includes providing immediate appointments and care that accommodates the challenges of long shifts, required overtime work, emergent situations, and having unconventional days and times “off.”

Dr. Kayal has hired two former law enforcement officers who help by serving as liaisons between the medical practice and the police. Paul Marin, Director of Patient Services, and Bob Lyon, Director of Operations, work closely with all local departments.

“My policy is to have our team available for the law enforcement community around the clock, 24/7/365. Paul and Bob are always just a phone call or text message away and will ensure that our officers’ orthopedic care is both immediate and world-class,” explains Dr. Kayal.

Sgt. Donald Wilson of the Franklin Lakes Police Department knows the benefits of Dr. Kayal’s support firsthand. “Selecting the right practice for surgery is an important decision; Dr. Kayal and his staff made that choice for my family easy,” he says. “His team has been there for me every step of the way. Dr. Kayal explained my injury, the surgery, and recovery in depth and detail, and he left no questions unanswered. The convenience of having multiple locations for physical therapy has made my life easy as a dad of two very active boys. He is an incredible physician and treats police officers as family. I thank him for getting me back to work and family life pain-free.”

Because the law enforcement community has been painted with a very broad brushstroke nationwide, Dr. Kayal wants to ensure that the “thin blue line” knows that he recognizes and appreciates the risks they take—every day—for their communities. “Law enforcement is an honorable profession. We respect them and want to give back because they have dedicated their lives to keeping our communities safe,” says Dr. Kayal.

Kayal’s support extends to police departments throughout northern New Jersey and Rockland County. In addition to the dedicated concierge service for officers and their families, Bob and Paul drop off lunch on Thursdays to police departments throughout Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Hudson, and Rockland Counties. Dr. Kayal also provides dinner for monthly PBA meetings as a “thank you” and supports local police and PBA fundraisers to help raise money for tactical equipment such as ballistic vests.

“Whether you’re a healthcare provider, police officer, firefighter, or teacher, we have all chosen our professions for the right reason—to give back to the community,” he says. Dr. Kayal notes that this mindset creates a natural affinity among community servants. “We’ve chosen our professions because we enjoy helping people.”

“I was raised with traditional values and a tremendous amount of respect for law enforcement,” says Dr. Kayal. “I just want to show my appreciation for all they do for our communities.”
