When people picture Alaska, they often imagine towering glaciers, whales breaching beside the ship, and snow-capped mountains stretching to the horizon.
After spending time there myself, I can tell you those images are absolutely real.
But what surprised me most wasn't what I expected to see—it was everything I didn't expect.
The Water Isn't Caribbean Blue
One of the first things I noticed was the color of the water.
Instead of the crystal-clear blue you might expect, much of the water near the shoreline had a brownish or greyish tint. At first, I wondered if something was wrong.
The answer was actually one of the fascinating lessons Alaska teaches every visitor.
Glaciers slowly grind rock into an incredibly fine powder called glacial silt. Rivers carry that silt into the ocean, giving the water its unique color in many areas of Southeast Alaska.
Once I understood why, I found myself appreciating it rather than questioning it. It's one of those details that reminds you you're exploring one of the world's last true wilderness destinations.
Small Ships Create a Different Experience
One of the biggest takeaways from my trip was just how much the size of your ship can influence your vacation.
On our sailing, we arrived in Juneau nearly two hours before several of the larger cruise ships.
That extra time made a remarkable difference. The streets were quiet. Coffee shops had open tables. The local shops were easy to browse. The waterfront felt relaxed.
Then the larger ships arrived. The atmosphere changed almost immediately as thousands of additional visitors came ashore.
That experience reinforced something I often discuss with clients: choosing the right ship isn't just about amenities onboard. It also changes your experience in every port.
Wildlife Really Is Everywhere
Before visiting Alaska, I hoped to see wildlife.
I didn't expect to see so much of it.
Throughout the trip we encountered:
Humpback whales

Moose
Every day seemed to offer another unforgettable wildlife encounter.
