The cabin. Most Americans hear that phrase and think little of it. But to a Minnesotan, “the cabin” stands for something downright emotional.
It is the foundry of fond family memories. It is the greatest escape, where you can be alone with yourself and your thoughts in pristine nature. It is also quite valuable; the coveted “lakefront property” everyone wishes they could have. But more than anything else, the cabin is your cabin. It deserves your protection every bit as much as it does your enjoyment.
What will happen to your cabin once you are no longer around? Will it enter the possession of a single relation? Or become an heirloom for future generations to cherish? Or will it be sold to help make your surviving spouse’s remaining years more comfortable?
These aren’t the kinds of things you like to ponder. They are dreary. But if you don’t decide what will become of your cabin after you’ve departed for the great golden lakefront in the sky, then you can be sure of one thing.
Someone else will.
And it may take them an inordinate amount of time.
And a whole lot of money.
And worst of all, they may reach the wrong decision – namely, one you would have disagreed with.
All of this is to underscore the most important thing every cabin owner must know.

Our vast experience navigating issues of property rights, inheritance laws, tax implications, and liability issues provides rock-solid answers to the unique estate planning questions cabin ownership imposes. Who will inherit the property? Who will be responsible for maintenance and taxes? If multiple people inherit the property, will one be able to buy out another’s interest? Who else will be allowed to use the property – and when? Which aligns best with your goals: a will, a trust, or an LLC?
Don’t let your cabin become a source of family friction. Don’t jeopardize your grandkids’ summer fun by letting your paradise fall into the wrong hands. Don’t worry everyone and waste money by letting probate court get involved. And above all else, do not trust a one-size-fits-all solution to your cabin succession planning needs.
Trust an expert instead. Contact Andy Gregory Law to explain your unique circumstances and wishes to a qualified estate planning attorney. Your lakeside legacy will be secured before long!
