Ever wonder where the prominent, 9-foot-tall owl carved out of a maple tree stump on North Main Street in Yardley came from? Viacheslav Kuzema is the talented sculptor of it and other area creations.
Also known as Slava Kuzema, he's a Ukrainian-born chainsaw sculptor/artist based in the Philadelphia region. He's widely recognized for his large-scale wood sculptures and "family tree carvings, often transforming dead or dying tree stumps into intricate wildlife or animal masterpieces such dogs, eagles, owls, horses and herons.
"Each artwork is crafted with a touching attention to detail, inspired by nature and human emotions," assures the artist who started his journey as a sculptor while a teenager in high school, participating in international exhibitions.
In 1990, Slava graduated from the Art School for gifted youth. He then was accepted to the Grekov University of Fine Art, specializing in sculpture; he graduated with honors in 1995.
He now accepts private commissions for customized yard art.
