As a designer, I see price limitations as part of a design brief, a constraint that pushes me to be more resourceful, more creative, to design pieces that give my customers what they want: exciting handmade jewelry as unique as they are. When I first started out as a jewelry designer, I chose to use 18K gold, rather than 14K, in my designs because I was attracted to its rich color and satiny surface. In the U.S., gold is rarely used in its purest state for jewelry pieces. Instead, it is mixed with other metals to create an alloy, a mixture with chemical and physical properties suited its intended use. Eighteen karat gold uses 75% pure gold in its alloy, as compared to 58% in 14K. This higher percentage of gold is responsible for its deep yellow color and other desirable properties.
