Several years ago, while speaking at a political rally, Commissioner Rick LoCastro noticed a woman and her daughter standing attentively in the crowd. What struck him immediately was not only how well they were dressed for an outdoor event in the Florida heat, but the example she was setting. Here was a mother bringing her daughter to a political gathering to learn firsthand about civic engagement and democracy.
After the event, Rick briefly met that woman, Julia, and learned that she and her daughter, Valeria, had been born in Ukraine before becoming proud American citizens. They exchanged only a few words before going their separate ways and did not see each other again for many months.
Later that year, Julia reached out after remembering the rally and the message he had shared. She wanted to become more involved in the community, but felt overwhelmed by the number of events being promoted throughout Naples. She had seen information about an annual ceremony honoring fallen officers and first responders and enquired about attending. Rick explained that it was one of the most meaningful events he attended each year and Julia asked if she could join him in attendance.
They met separately in the parking lot and walked into the event together. As they sat through the ceremony, Rick began to see a side of Julia that left a lasting impression. She had chosen to wear a black dress to honor those being remembered, and throughout the program I could see how deeply she was moved by the stories and tributes. Her sincerity, compassion, and respect for the significance of the event were unmistakable. Afterward, they exchanged a polite handshake and said goodbye.
Months passed before Julia reached out again, this time seeking recommendations on local social events. During our conversations, we realized we were both unattached and shared many interests, including travel, culture, and community involvement. We decided to attend a local musical event together and planned dinner beforehand.
What began as a simple evening out quickly became much more. We enjoyed great conversation, excellent food, music, and plenty of laughter. We discovered remarkable similarities in our experiences and outlook on life. Having both traveled extensively around the world, we found ourselves sharing stories and perspectives that created an immediate connection.
Several dinners followed, and as their friendship grew, so did their admiration for one another. Then, came a challenge. At the conclusion of what would be their last dinner in Naples before her upcoming travels, Rick asked about seeing her again. Julia smiled and explained that she was leaving for Milan and Paris Fashion Week, where she and her models would be showcasing designs from her company.
"If you want another date," she joked, "you'll have to meet me in Milan or Paris."
Rick accepted.
Because of Rick's responsibilities as a County Commissioner, Milan was not possible, but Paris was. A few days later, he found himself sitting front row at her fashion show in Paris before they spent several unforgettable days exploring the city together.
Anyone who has experienced a genuine connection with someone understands that sharing a few days in Europe can accelerate a relationship. Paris provided the perfect backdrop to deepen what had already begun. While both had traveled extensively over the years, experiencing it together felt entirely different.
It was magical.
Over time, their relationship continued to grow through shared experiences and adventures. They traveled together throughout Italy on multiple occasions for both business and vacation, attended fashion events in New York, Orlando, and Miami Swim Week, and continued learning from one another's worlds.
Rick became fascinated by Julia's work in fashion and entrepreneurship, while she embraced the demands and responsibilities that come with public service and Rick's previous 24-year career in the Air Force. They also discovered a shared appreciation for patriotism, community, and family.
As our relationship evolved, we realized we had several mutual friends who knew us separately and were delighted to see our paths finally converge.
Eventually, we began planning a future together.
On April 18, surrounded by family and close friends, they celebrated their wedding at Sale e Pepe on Marco Island. The Gulf-front setting provided the perfect location for an intimate ceremony and reception.
Rather than scheduling a traditional sunset ceremony, they chose an earlier 5:30pm wedding, so that guests wouldn't be eating past 'Marco Midnight'. Following the ceremony, guests moved inside for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while the terrace was transformed into a reception space overlooking the Gulf.
The timing proved perfect.
Instead of watching a sunset during the ceremony, guests enjoyed a spectacular sunset while seated for dinner. As the sky turned shades of gold and orange over the water, everyone enjoyed a multi-course meal curated specifically for the occasion. By the time darkness settled in, dinner was concluding, the stars were visible overhead, and they were ready to cut the cake beneath a moonlit Gulf sky.
The wedding was truly centered around family.
Rick's son attended with his girlfriend and stood beside him as one of his groomsmen. His daughter attended with her husband, while Julia's daughter, Valeria, served as both flower girl and bridesmaid. In a remarkable coincidence, their wedding day also happened to be Valeria's 12th birthday. Early in the reception, they surprised her with a special birthday cake and celebrated her milestone with everyone in attendance.
Rick's daughter Gina had also celebrated a birthday just days earlier, making the occasion even more meaningful, especially as she prepares to welcome their first grandchild.
The day carried additional emotional significance. Rick's mother had passed away just a few months earlier on December 27th. Though she could not be physically present, her spirit was felt throughout the celebration. She would have loved the Italian lemon theme, the incredible cuisine, and the joy shared among family and friends.
Like many couples finding love later in life, Julia and Rick often speak about life's chapters. They each cherish the experiences and memories that shaped them individually, but they are equally excited about the chapter they are now writing together. Blending their families and building a future as one has become one of life's greatest blessings.
Several moments from the wedding remain especially memorable:
One involved their longtime family friend Larry Swank, who officiated the ceremony. Until moments before the wedding, Larry believed he would simply walk down the aisle and take his place as pastor. Instead, Julia surprised him by asking him to walk her down the aisle.
The gesture was deeply meaningful. Larry and his wife, Andrea, have never had children, and he once mentioned that he would never have the opportunity to walk a daughter down the aisle. The surprise left him emotional and created a moment no one would forget.
Another unforgettable memory occurred during their first dance to Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love." Unbeknownst to them, one of the terrace drains sat directly beneath the dance floor area. Near the end of the song, Julia whispered, "My foot is stuck." Her heel had become lodged in the drain beneath her dress. After carefully removing her shoe and freeing the heel, they both laughed as photographers and guests dubbed it our "Cinderella moment."
The celebration was filled with countless thoughtful details. Chef Andrea Cirino personally designed a custom menu featuring homemade lemon ravioli and unique duet-style courses. Their wedding cake was a one-of-a-kind honey layer creation adorned with intricate Italian lemon-inspired artistry.
Although their guest list remained intentionally intimate, the evening felt grand in every way. Beautiful flowers, live strings, exceptional music, remarkable cuisine, and outstanding vendors combined to create a celebration beyond anything we could have imagined.
As guests departed, each received a personalized thank-you gift featuring custom limoncello and Norman Love lemon chocolates.
It was the perfect ending to a day that celebrated not only a wedding, but the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter together.
