Inside Atlanta’s Jewelry Market

Spring has long been associated with renewal; a season of resetting priorities, refreshing routines and, increasingly, rethinking how we invest. While traditional portfolios often center on stocks and real estate, a growing number of investors are turning to something more tangible: jewelry. Equal parts personal adornment and financial asset, fine jewelry offers a unique intersection of beauty and long-term value.

Few understand this balance better than Amy Barbree, owner of Barbree & Co., a fine jewelry buyer based in Chamblee. With over three decades of experience, Barbree has built a reputation rooted in trust, expertise and relationship-driven service. But her journey into the industry began long before her company’s founding.

“I was introduced to the retail and jewelry world through my family. My father owned gift stores in the early 1990s. After he suffered a stroke, I stepped in to help support our family, which led me to take a very hands-on approach to building my career,” she shares. “I began traveling across the country selling Native American jewelry… wherever I could connect with customers. That experience taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of building trust with every interaction.”

Today, that foundation informs how Barbree navigates an evolving market—one currently shaped by inflation, shifting consumer preferences and record-high precious metal prices.

“In today’s market, precious metals, particularly gold and silver, continue to be among the most reliable physical assets for preserving value,” Barbree explains. “They have historically served as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, while also offering diversification within a broader investment portfolio.”

This stability is driving a noticeable uptick in selling activity. As gold and silver prices climb, many individuals are choosing to liquidate assets they’ve held for years. “Many clients are taking advantage of these strong market conditions to convert unused or inherited jewelry… into cash,” Barbree notes.

Yet the value of jewelry isn’t always obvious. Pieces that feel outdated, or even broken, can still carry significant worth. “Many people have valuable items tucked away… without fully realizing their worth,” she says, emphasizing the importance of professional evaluations to uncover hidden value.

For those looking to invest, Barbree advises patience over quick returns. “Precious metals and physical assets tend to perform best over time… rather than as a short-term investment,” she explains. “Patience and consistency are key.”

Still, not every piece should be reduced to its market value. When it comes to family heirlooms, Barbree encourages thoughtful consideration. “If there is any hesitation, it’s often best to hold onto the piece… For many, the decision ultimately comes down to personal significance versus practicality.”

As the investment landscape continues to shift, one thing remains clear: the most meaningful investments are often the ones you can hold in your hands.
