In Berthoud, Colorado, there is a rescue built around the smallest of dogs and the biggest of dreams.
Harley’s Dream was founded in 2016 by Rudi Taylor, but its heartbeat began long before the organization had a name. It began with Harley, a tiny Chihuahua who had survived years in a puppy mill, a place where dogs are treated less like living beings and more like products. Harley had lost an eye due to the conditions he was subjected to, yet what remained in him was not bitterness. It was resilience. It was hope. It was the kind of spirit that could move people.
He became known as the “Little Dog with a Big Dream,” and that dream grew into a mission: to end puppy mills and save senior dogs.
Harley’s Dream began as an effort to raise awareness, educate the public, and advocate against puppy mills. Over time, the mission expanded to include rescuing senior dogs who might otherwise be euthanized in shelters. Today, about 90 percent of the dogs Harley’s Dream rescues are seniors, many of them small breeds, and many arrive with medical needs from years of neglect, abandonment, or surrender.
For Rudi, the work is both deeply personal and profoundly purposeful. “Without question, Harley was that dog!” she says of the one who inspired her life in rescue. “Harley truly was magical!” At first, she thought she could use Harley as a way to educate people about puppy mills. But over time, she realized something more humbling had happened. She felt she had become his tool instead.
That sense of service continues through every dog Harley’s Dream saves.
The rescue focuses on the dogs shelters may call “unadoptable” because of age or health issues. These are the dogs who have been overlooked, the ones who need dental care, diagnostics, medications, surgeries, or time to feel safe again. Veterinary care is one of the rescue’s greatest challenges, with Harley’s Dream averaging at least $2,000 in medical care for every dog rescued.
But the reward, Rudi says, is beyond measure. Watching a frightened senior dog leave a shelter, receive care, and finally find a loving family never gets old. Seeing a neglected or abused little dog wag its tail for the first time is the kind of moment that keeps the mission alive.
“Small acts of compassion can completely change a life,” Rudi says.
Few stories show that more clearly than Broccoli’s. “The tiny Chihuahua was found wandering the streets of Denver during a 20-degree snowstorm."He was skin and bones, wounded, severely neglected, and one of his eyes was so damaged it had to be removed, leaving him completely blind," Rudi reflects.
And still, his spirit was there.
Harley’s Dream gave Broccoli the medical care he needed and found him the perfect home with Jonathan. People often say the rescue saved Broccoli, but Rudi sees it differently. She believes Broccoli saved Jonathan. The bond between them became a reminder that rescue is never only about the animal. Sometimes, the dog who needs saving becomes the one who gives someone else purpose, companionship, and unconditional love.
That is the quiet miracle of rescue.
Harley’s Dream also works to change the future for dogs through education and advocacy. The organization encourages adoption, fostering, volunteering, spaying and neutering, and speaking up against puppy mills. Its Seniors Saving Seniors program, which matches senior dogs with senior adopters, is especially meaningful to Rudi and reflects the rescue’s belief that love does not expire with age.
For anyone considering adoption, Rudi offers a simple message: “do not overlook the oldest dog or the one who has waited the longest. Sometimes the dog no one notices becomes the best companion you have ever had.”
