When Ian Zakharenka first stepped into the Taekwondo studio at age six, few could have predicted the remarkable journey ahead of him. Today, the Potomac teen is not only a nationally ranked black belt and two-time USA National Taekwondo Team member, but also a mentor, coach, and role-model for younger athletes throughout the community.

"Ian is one of the most exceptional students I've taught in more than 40 years of instruction," says his longtime mentor, Master Sharma. "His achievements are impressive, but it's his character that truly sets him apart."

Ian's dedication to Taekwondo has led to extraordinary accomplishments. He earned his Junior Black Belt in 2022 and his Senior Black Belt just one year later. In 2024, he became the first student in his studio's 40-year history to qualify for the USA National Taekwondo Team. Then, he repeated the achievement again in 2025, earning a second consecutive selection.

Yet Ian's impact extends far beyond his own success.

As a junior instructor and competition coach, he dedicates countless hours to helping younger students develop both their skills and confidence. In his first year as head coach, two of his students qualified for the USA National Team, an achievement that speaks to his leadership and ability to inspire excellence in others.

Under Ian's leadership as forms team captain and coach, the studio experienced its most successful competitive season ever, with 60 athletes earning a record-breaking 90 medals. Fellow students admire his calm demeanor, positive attitude, and willingness to help wherever needed.

Outside the studio, Ian excels academically as well. Maintaining straight A’s in Advanced Placement and college-level courses while taking on the workload of a school year internship, he demonstrates the same discipline and commitment that define his athletic career.

Like any elite athlete, Ian has also faced challenges, including injuries and the demands of balancing training, academics, and personal commitments. Rather than viewing obstacles as setbacks, he sees them as opportunities to grow stronger.

Despite his accomplishments, those who know Ian best describe him as humble, kind, and approachable. Whether helping a new student tie a belt or encouraging a teammate after a difficult competition, he consistently leads with compassion.

As he looks towards future intercollegiate competitions and double majoring in Aerospace Engineering and Astrophysics at the University of Maryland, Ian continues to embody the values of perseverance, leadership, and integrity. He proves that true champions are measured not only by medals, but by the positive impact they have on others.
