Martinique Simmons, Kyle native and owner of The Simmons Group Insurance Services, exudes a lovely fusion of confidence and humbleness, strength and vulnerability. Her genuine warmth and friendliness are contagious…a refreshing trait when it comes to counting on someone to help with insurance, a word that most don’t get too excited about.
On any given morning, Martinique might be collecting eggs from her backyard chickens — coffee in hand, “zoning out” as much as she can (her mind never stops). She could be obsessively mapping out the day’s plan, but she knows each day looks different and that it will serve her well to go with the flow. The non-negotiables tend to present themselves at the right time. As the day progresses, she’s deep in conversation with a client, translating insurance policies into language that actually makes sense…taking her daughter’s forgotten textbook over to school…and carving out time for a weightlifting session — because taking care of her body and mind isn’t optional. “I just do it,” she laughs. “I fit in the things I want and need to fit in. I make the time.”
For Martinique, showing up for her two children, husband, herself, and her clients is a balancing act, but one she practices daily with grace, patience, and determination. There’s no rigid routine, no expectation of perfection — just consistent recalibration and flexibility on top of a commitment to modeling independence and strength for her twelve-year-old daughter.
Building Something of Her Own
As the owner of an independent insurance brokerage, Martinique built her career with intention. She wanted more than a job; she wanted autonomy and freedom. She spent a decade as a captive insurance agent, working hard to essentially build someone else’s business. “You spend years developing relationships, building this thing, and at the end of it, when you retire, you don’t leave with anything,” she recalls.
In 2022, she launched her company, her husband David her only coworker. Together, they achieve that ever-so-important balance; she is controlled chaos, and he is methodical about tackling one task at a time. Among the things she loves about her work: “You’re building generational wealth. It’s yours,” she says. And while nobody really likes to talk about insurance, there’s power in understanding it. “Educating people on this thing people have to have—why they have it, what they have, what it does and doesn’t do, so when stuff hits the fan, they’re familiar with it—is important. Ultimately, my work is about putting people first and building relationships.”
Redefining Doing It All
With two kids involved in multiple sports, a husband who works alongside her, and a thriving business to run, Martinique stands firm in her belief that it’s important for a woman to define her identity on her own terms. She is not her career. She is not just a mom, or just a wife. “I’m proud of all those things. You never stop being a mom. And work never stays at work. I’m obsessed with my family, and I love my business. But being my own thing is super important to me too,” she says. Her life is a constant juggle, with everything overlapping, and in between she revels in quiet moments alone, reading or enjoying the natural beauty around her home. And she’s committed to taking care of her health.
For her, strength training—three times a week with a trainer—has become more than a workout routine. “Lifting reminds me I can do hard things.” She particularly loves it when her son and daughter join her at the gym and witness their mom doing those hard things and loving it. It’s also an important message for her daughter that it’s a good thing for a girl to have muscle and fortitude…that “strong is cool!”
Just as her personality reflects a beautiful balance, her life is a reminder that you can be ambitious and protect your peace. You can show up for everyone else and take care of yourself.
Martinique’s Local Favorites
When she’s not working or spending time with family, Martinique loves supporting local businesses around Hays County. For a great cup of coffee, she heads to Hays City Hideout, while Hays City Store is her go-to spot for a casual lunch. When it’s time for a date night, she enjoys the atmosphere at Taste on Main. If she’s craving something sweet, Faith, Hope & Cupcakes always hits the spot. For a little self-care, she visits Lush Nails in San Marcos, and she loves shopping at Buff City Soap for everyday essentials. Supporting local is just another way she stays connected to her community.
