Why are some homes more inviting than others? How do we create that same wonderful vibe in our own homes? During this season of thankfulness, guests will play bigger-than-usual roles in our narratives, and we want them to feel welcome, comfortable and cherished, while reflecting our family personalities and preferences, and making sure our homes are functional and ready to accommodate the holidays without unforeseen problems and stressors.
Chas Daniels is the founder and owner of Acero Bella, Houston’s luxury fixture and plumbing destination, with two boutique showrooms: one in The Woodlands and one in Houston. Its experienced staff enables clients to choose high-end products–decorative plumbing, cabinet and door hardware, and pro-style appliances–and then incorporate those choices into a seamless part of any project. We asked Chas to share a few tips as we prepare for this season of merriment.
TWCL: As hosts, which areas of our homes should we revisit to see if we need any design or other types of updates or additions to make holiday experiences successful and seamless?
CD: With impending guests around the corner, these are the things I would consider to make your home feel inviting and impressive.
- A built-in coffee maker makes fresh brewed coffee one cup at a time and makes lattes, cappuccinos and hot tea a breeze.
- A steam oven cooks the moistest turkey or tenderloin and keeps sides the perfect temperature without drying them out.
- Remember to add a lighted makeup mirror for your guest bath, and don’t forget one for yourself to put under the Christmas tree.
TWCL: In the kitchen, what specifics should we consider?
CD: For a fast update, consider changing your kitchen faucet and cabinet hardware, the jewelry of the kitchen. You will waltz into the holiday with a glow! Don’t forget to use all your appliances over the next few weeks. Lack of use is the biggest culprit of mechanical failure. Check now in case you need parts or service prior to guests arriving.
TWCL: In bathrooms, what do you suggest?
CD: Sink faucets, showers and toilets suffer from lack of use as well. Take a shower in each of the bathrooms prior to kids returning for the holidays and prior to guests who may stay over. You’ll know ahead of time if you have any maintenance issues, and avoid adding stress at a time that should be joyful and fulfilling.
TWCL: What else might we consider to enliven our hospitality?
CD: It’s fun to grill when family is visiting. Do you need a new grill?
TWCL: Are there other actions we might take to make holidays successful?
CD: Practice mindful gratitude. Let go of the anxiety that your home is not perfect, your side dish didn’t turn out, you don’t look just right, etc. and take a moment to enjoy the beautiful people that build the foundation of your life.
