More Than a Portrait

Sarah Bussey Photography Captures the Unique Spirit of Pets

How did you get started in pet portrait photography?

I’ve always been an animal lover. Before photography became my career, I actually thought I wanted to be a veterinarian. Over the years, I realized what I loved most was capturing the connection people have with the animals they love. Pets are family, and being able to photograph those relationships is something I never take for granted.

Every pet has a unique personality. How do you bring that out in your photographs?

I spend a little time getting to know them before I ever start shooting. I let them be themselves and work around their personality. That’s usually when the best moments happen.

What do you hope families feel when they see their finished portraits?

Pets are such a big part of our lives, and our time with them never feels long enough. If a photograph can bring back memories, make someone smile or remind them of how loved their pet was, then I’ve done my job.
