Nuance Music Studio is not simply a place where lessons are given—it is a space where music is lived, shared, and experienced as a transformative force. Co-founded by Dr. Milton Fernandez, his mother Dr. Farida Peña, and his wife Sarah Fernandez, the studio carries forward a family legacy that began more than 40 years ago in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Fernandez’s grandmother founded one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious music academies, planting the seeds of a mission that continues today in Tulsa: to inspire a lifelong love of music through intentional, heart-centered education.
For the team at Nuance, music is far more than a technical skill. It is a way of shaping character, strengthening relationships, and forming community. “Technology moves the world forward,” says Dr. Fernandez, “but art teaches us how to feel and how to be human.” In an era where arts programs often face cuts, Nuance stands as a testament to the profound role music plays in emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and human connection.
The leadership structure of Nuance reflects that philosophy of harmony and collaboration. Described by Dr. Fernandez as a “three-legged stool,” each director brings a vital area of expertise. Dr. Milton Fernandez, an active performer on both national and international stages, serves as the artistic visionary—guiding students through the deeper expressive layers of music and helping them uncover their authentic musical voice. Sarah Fernandez, who holds a master’s degree in analytics and works professionally as a data scientist, manages administration, marketing, and operations with clarity and precision, blending her analytical background with a deep appreciation for creativity and community-building. Dr.Farida Peña, who holds both an M.D. and a master’s in music education, leads teacher training and Kindermusik development. A licensed Kindermusik educator since 2002, she also serves on the program development team at Kindermusik International, where she helps shape curriculum and train educators around the world. Together, they have built a studio where students—from toddlers to advanced adults—can grow through every stage of their musical journey.
The decision to open the studio in Tulsa was rooted in a search for community. After experiences in both Oregon and North Carolina, the family was drawn to Tulsa’s authentic commitment to the arts and its culture of mutual support. “Tulsa welcomed us before we even arrived,” Sarah recalls. “People weren’t just polite—they were excited to connect us, collaborate with us, and grow something together.”
This spirit of connection is especially evident during the holiday season, a time when music carries deep emotional resonance. Instead of the typical high-pressure Christmas recital, Nuance takes a different approach—one centered on joy, presence, and togetherness. They host relaxed gatherings where students share music with one another, sip hot cocoa, decorate a community pine tree, and experience music as a celebration rather than a performance. The formal recital is intentionally scheduled for after the holidays, allowing families to enjoy the season without added stress.
“We want the holidays to deepen connections, not deplete them,” says Dr. Fernandez. This perspective is woven into every aspect of the studio’s culture, where music is used not only to develop skill but to build confidence and strengthen family bonds.
As Nuance looks to the future, its vision extends beyond its walls. Dr. Fernandez hopes to help establish Tulsa as a national hub for the arts—where music is not just taught but shared as a vital part of community life. “There were many people who helped me become who I am,” he reflects. “Now it’s my responsibility to continue that thread.”
In a fast-paced world, Nuance Music Studio offers something significant: a reminder that music is not just something we perform—it is something we experience together, shaping who we are and how we connect.
