The Most Important Thing To Pack For Back-to-School Isn't In A Backpack

As parents, we spend weeks preparing our children for a new school year. We shop for backpacks, sharpen pencils, label lunchboxes, and organize schedules. But after more than a decade as an elementary school teacher, I've learned there's one thing children need that can't be purchased in the school supply aisle: confidence.

Every year, I watched children walk into my classroom wondering if they were smart enough, athletic enough, popular enough, or simply enough. Those quiet questions often shaped their school experience long before the first lesson began.

The good news is that confidence can be nurtured at home.

Before school starts, remind your child that their value isn't determined by grades, achievements, friendships, or comparison. Celebrate their unique gifts, encourage effort over perfection, and let them know they are loved, not because of what they accomplish, but because of who they are.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the confidence to walk into a classroom believing they already have everything they need to become the person they were created to be.

As parents, we may not be able to control every challenge our children will face this school year, but we can help them to know one important truth: they are enough.
