For families at Grassland Dance Academy, that feeling begins the moment they walk through the doors. What started as a single studio in 2013 has grown into a thriving dance academy with three full studios and a spacious lobby, yet the heart of the studio remains unchanged. “Since opening our doors in September 2013, our physical space has grown tremendously, but our core mission of remaining a tight-knit, hometown dance family has never changed,” said owner Maureen Sharp.
That sense of family is intentional. The expanded lobby is designed as more than a waiting area. It serves as a place where dancers stretch, eat dinner, finish homework and spend time together between classes. “We haven't just built a bigger studio; we've built a bigger living room for our community,” Sharp said. For Sharp, the theme of home is deeply personal. Raised in Franklin’s Grassland community, she sees the studio as both a business and a homecoming. “The theme ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ could not be more literal for me,” Sharp said. “Growing up right here in Franklin, specifically in the Grassland community, means that running this business is truly a homecoming every single day.”
That lifelong connection shapes everything about Grassland Dance Academy. Sharp intentionally rooted the studio’s identity in the community that shaped her, preserving the values that have long defined the area. “Our studio values are built on the same foundations I grew up with here: loyalty, neighborly support, and a deep sense of belonging,” Sharp said.
In today’s digital world, those values matter more than ever. Children are navigating constant change, social pressure and endless online distractions. At Grassland Dance Academy, dancers are encouraged to step away from screens and reconnect with something real. “At GDA, we ask our dancers to put their phones down and step away from the digital noise,” Sharp said. “Inside the studio, they can truly unplug and focus on the art of dance.”
But the impact goes far beyond technique. Over the years, the studio has become a place where confidence grows, friendships deepen and emotional support flourishes. “We are 100% more than just a place to learn technique,” Sharp said. “At GDA, our dancers are truly more like family than just friends.” That family atmosphere is built through daily mentorship and meaningful traditions. From Daddy Daughter Dance Week around Valentine’s Day to Mother’s Day Dance Week and the beloved Senior Scrapbook tradition, Grassland Dance creates moments families carry with them long after graduation.
Many dancers begin at age 3 and stay through their senior year of high school. Along the way, instructors become more than teachers. They become trusted mentors during some of life’s most formative years. “By creating a safe space where dancers can voice their feelings without judgment, we teach them how to navigate difficult moments with grace and resilience,” Sharp said.
