Where Little Readers Find Confidence With Every Page

Paws 2 Read pairs young readers with therapy dogs, creating a welcoming space for confidence.

For a child learning to read, opening a book can sometimes come with more anxiety than excitement. Sounding out unfamiliar words or reading aloud can make young readers worry about mistakes. At Peoria Main Library, Paws 2 Read is helping change that experience—one story and one furry listener at a time.

Each month, certified therapy dogs like Penny, an enthusiastic chocolate Lab, and Billy, a patient Corgi, settle in to hear stories from young readers. There are no corrections, no pressure and no rushing through the pages. The dogs simply listen, giving children a comfortable place to practice reading while building confidence along the way.

The result is an environment where reading feels less like an assignment and more like time spent with a friend. Children often arrive with dog-themed picture books in hand, ready to read to their favorite pups. Returning families have become an especially meaningful part of the program, with children greeting familiar dogs by name while making sure each four-legged listener gets a story.

Beyond strengthening literacy skills, Paws 2 Read creates positive associations with books, allowing children to practice at their own pace and discover the fun of reading aloud.

Paws 2 Read meets on the third Saturday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Peoria Main Library, 8463 W. Monroe St. in Downtown Peoria.
